Who will farm tomorrow — and under what conditions? This is the question at the heart of the upcoming international symposium «The Farmers of Tomorrow: Skills, Jobs and Renewal Pathways in Times of Uncertainty», organised by CIHEAM Zaragoza, in collaboration with AECID and the SafeHabitus project.
Across the Mediterranean, agriculture is undergoing a deep structural transformation. Generational renewal, farm succession, labour conditions, access to land and resources, rural living — these are not just demographic questions. They are economic, social and territorial ones.
The symposium will bring together ~40 speakers and 100 invited guests across five thematic round tables:
- The economics of farming: profitability, land and access to resources
- Work in agriculture: labour dynamics, skills and working conditions
- Why choose farming? Rural living conditions and the choice to stay
- Farming differently: technology, cooperatives and new business models
- Enabling the next farmers: policies, partnerships and investment
As part of the Symposium there will be a Poster Session –co-funded by CIHEAM Zaragoza and the Horizon Europe project SafeHabitus– aimed at featuring impactful, innovative and transformative initiatives, capturing both opportunities and challenges in the Mediterranean agri-food sector. Posters should tell real stories from the field, including successes, struggles, lessons learned and innovation that can be replicated or inspire others.
The call is open to individuals under 40 and organisations with hands-on experience in the agri-food sector across the Mediterranean. We welcome farmers, entrepreneurs, cooperatives, NGOs, researchers, extension workers, and youth and women-led organisations.
Up to 15 posters will be selected. Travel and accommodation fully covered for selected participants.
