Nutrient management is now central to discussions on agricultural sustainability, as decades of intensification have often relied on mineral fertilisers applied without sufficient attention to nutrient cycles, resulting in low nutrient use efficiency, soil degradation, water pollution, greenhouse gas emissions, and dependence on costly, geopolitically vulnerable inputs.
Integrated Nutrient Management (INM) offers a more comprehensive approach by combining mineral and organic nutrient sources, harnessing soil biological processes, recovering nutrients through circular approaches, and using indicators such as nutrient use efficiency and nutrient balances to support informed decision-making.
These challenges are especially acute in the Mediterranean region, where low organic matter, salinity, water scarcity, and climate extremes demand region-specific solutions.
To address these issues, CIHEAM Zaragoza is organising an advanced course that provides participants with the knowledge and practical tools to implement INM through an interdisciplinary approach, integrating soil science, plant nutrition, microbiology, water management, circularity, and advanced research methods. The programme combines lectures, guided debates, case studies, group work and a technical visit to ensure applied understanding and readiness for field or policy application.
The course is designed for researchers, PhD candidates, professionals from fertiliser companies, agricultural advisers, extension agents, policymakers, NGO professionals and practitioners from Mediterranean countries working in soil fertility, plant nutrition, sustainable agriculture and nutrient management.
